You use the verb to be to create the continuous form
I am talking. (present) I was talking. (past)
2. While or When
While is used for longer duration events.
While he was waiting for the train he had a sandwich.
When is used for quick events.
When the train arrived he got on and sat down.
3. What were you doing?
(eight 0’clock – yesterday evening – play cards)
I was playing cards at eight o’clock yesterday evening.
At eight o’clock yesterday evening I was playing cards.
4. Gap fill exercise
First, read the text so you understand what it is about.
Then put each phrase into a gap so that the text makes sense.
5. Put the paragraphs in the correct order
If you are not sure where to start, look at paragraph D.
Look at the text again and highlight all the places where the past continuous is used and highlight while and when.
6 &7. All the answers are in the text.
